For more than 37 years, John Finton has been dedicated to the art, craft, and business of building exceptional homes. As the founder and Principal of Finton Advisory, John brings a rare combination of hands-on construction experience, design sensibility, financial oversight, and an intimate understanding of the expectations that come with creating highly personalized luxury estates.

Over the course of his career, John has been directly involved in the development and construction of more than 400 homes, working with high-net-worth individuals, business leaders, celebrities, and internationally recognized clients. His experience spans some of the most demanding residential markets in the United States and abroad, including West Los Angeles, Beverly Hills, Malibu, Santa Monica, Newport Beach, Laguna Beach, San Diego, Mexico, Europe, and Asia.

At the height of his building career, John was overseeing a portfolio of projects and a workforce of approximately 2,000 people on a daily basis. This depth of experience gives him an unusually comprehensive perspective on the entire building process—from the earliest site evaluation and schematic design through permitting, procurement, construction, quality control, and final completion.

John remains personally involved with his clients and projects. He works closely with owners, architects, designers, contractors, consultants, and artisans to translate a client’s vision into a finished home while maintaining close attention to design integrity, craftsmanship, schedule, and cost.

One of John’s particular strengths is the early visioning process. He is highly engaged in helping clients articulate what they want their home to become, often working alongside the architect and design team to develop the ideas, materials, proportions, and details that establish the character of a project from the beginning. His experience allows him to recognize both the possibilities and the practical implications of a design long before construction begins.

Throughout his career, John has worked across a remarkably broad range of architectural and design traditions—from French Normandy and traditional Malibu architecture to Italian modern and Asian contemporary. His projects have incorporated highly specialized amenities and environments, including private theaters, bowling alleys, vineyards, polo fields, extensive entertaining spaces, and other highly customized elements.

He also has extensive experience sourcing distinctive materials and architectural elements from around the world. Reclaimed Chinese cobblestone, centuries-old Indonesian teak, rare stone, architectural antiques, and other one-of-a-kind materials have been incorporated into projects under his direction, bringing a sense of authenticity, permanence, and individuality to the finished estate.

Finton Advisory was established to provide owners with an experienced advocate throughout the development and construction of their homes.

Unlike many advisory and project-management firms, Finton Advisory’s foundation is actual luxury homebuilding experience. John has spent decades on the construction side of the business, giving him a practical understanding of how decisions made during design ultimately affect construction, quality, schedule, and cost.

The firm works closely with high-net-worth individuals, family offices, business managers, architects, designers, and development teams to provide owners with an independent perspective on the financial and operational aspects of their projects.

John’s role is ultimately to protect the owner’s interests while helping the entire team achieve the intended result. This includes evaluating budgets and estimates, reviewing scopes and proposals, identifying opportunities for cost optimization, monitoring quality and progress, coordinating with the project team, and helping ensure that the completed home reflects the architect’s vision and the owner’s expectations.

After three decades in luxury construction, John understands that the most successful projects are not simply about building an expensive house. They are about bringing together architecture, interiors, landscape, craftsmanship, materials, technology, and execution into one cohesive vision.

He is also the author of California Luxury Living: A Private Tour, published in 2013, documenting a selection of exceptional residential environments and the people and ideas behind them.

Beyond Building

Outside of his professional life, John is an avid sailor and has spent decades pursuing his passion for boating and sailing. He enjoys spending time on the water and working on his own boat, which provides a very different but equally hands-on outlet for his interest in craftsmanship, engineering, and problem solving. John and his wife, Nicole, a luxury interior designer and founder of Nicole Antoine Interior Design, divide their time between California and Europe. John has two daughters and two adult sons.
